Nick Hornby's books are always funny and sharp and this one is no exception. His characters all meet on a rooftop because they are planning on jumping to their deaths. They talk each other down in a way and stay connected (more or less) dispite their huge differences and problems. And somehow they all struggle through confronting their lives and how to continue living them. And it's funny and insightful to boot.

Having read other Nick Hornby books i looked forward to reading this one and i wasnt disappointed. 4 people try and commit suicide on New Years Eve and while they dont obviously go ahead and do it they do decide to keep in touch and help each other for 3 months after to make sure they dont do anything silly. This sets up the book, written alternatively by the 4 characters so you really get to know them and see all the situations from different perspectives. This method really worked for me and while i didnt love all them the same i dont think it matters. I found it a very funny and moving book marred only by the excessive swearing which i didnt think he needed to resort to. I also liked the way he didnt make it a hollywood ending although im sure there is a film in the making!!
