I read recently that R.J.Ellory wrote this book without having visited the US, which makes this book all the more remarkable. Set in the south, this book begins in the 1950s, where young girls are being murdered. Our narrator, Joseph Vaughan, is a child himself at the time, and tries to stop the killing spree, but fails. The murders stop after 10 years, but Joseph is never confident the right man is caught. An outstanding novel with a distinctive voice, this bring the Southern states to life.
