Set in the heart of Afghanistan, this is the story of two women who struggled for freedom under the Taliban rule. A very painfully honest and heart wrenching story, it makes one appreciate little things in life - it makes you cry, it tears you to pieces, it makes you weep with joy. A must read

Mariam is only fifteen when she is sent to Kabul to marry Rasheed. Nearly two decades later, a friendship grows between Mariam and a local teenager, Laila, as strong as the ties between mother and daughter. When the Taliban take over, life becomes a desperate struggle against starvation, brutality and fear. Yet love can move a person to act in unexpected ways, and lead them to overcome the most daunting obstacles with a startling heroism.

'Kabul is enthralling...One could not count the moons that shimmer on her roofs and the thousand splendid suns that hide behind her walls.' By the author of 'The Kite Runner', this is an inspiring tale about two generations of women trapped in loveless marriages. Hosseini captures a sense of personal tragedy and history in this engrossing read which will not fail to tug at the heartstrings.

A Thousand Splendid Suns tells the story of Mariam and the strong relationship she builds with laila, her husbands 2nd wife, in the face of adversity. The novel is set against the backdrop of the war in Afghanistan and gives a stong insight into the conditions faced by normal Afghanis during the conflict with the Taliban. Hosseini has a fantastic ability to draw the reader in and paints a vivid picture of his characters and their lives.
