Birdsong

Set before and during the great war, Birdsong captures the drama of that era on both a national and a personal scale. It is the story of Stephen, a young Englishman, who arrives in Amiens in 1910. His life goes through a series of traumatic experiences, from the clandestine love affair that tears apart the family with whom he lives, to the unprecedented experiences of the war itself.

    Birdsong

Birdsong is an endearing, beautifully written and most moving story. It is written so well that the pages fly by with ease. A book that stays with you for years after you read it reminding you of the sacrifice made for the world by the soldiers in WWI.

    Birdsong by Sebastian Faulks

A really beautiful novel of love and war. Gives an insight into the terrible hardship of trench life during the war and tells the story of a forbidden romance between an Englishman, Stephen, and a married Frenchwoman, Isabelle.

    This is a fabulous novel.

What starts off as a romance soon evolves into a harrowing portrayal of the tunnellers and soldiers fighting the First World War. Faulk's descriptions are so vivid that you are drawn into the mud and darkness and cannot put the book down.
