Bookseller review
An amazingly assured and exciting debut set in Soviet Russia, 1953. Child 44 has a wonderfully realised sense of all - pervading dear and the desperateness of a chilling race against time.

A brutal piece of thrilling Fiction writing set against a backdrop of the communist Russia that hooks you in from the start. It is one of those rare books where you feel little empathy towards the main character but can't help wanting to see how his tale works out. I read it in two sittings and although the ending of the book is possibly a little too neat (hey this is Fiction after all), Child 44 is really worth reading and deserves the plaudits it has received. Am reading the Secret Speech now which doesn't seem as good - maybe there is only so much Communism a person can take...
