Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas: (Harper Perennial Modern Classics S.)

Stylish reissue of a classic first published in the 1970s: Hunter S Thompson's ether-fuelled, savage journey to the heart of the American Dream. 'We were somewhere around Barstow on the edge of the desert when the drugs began to take hold! And suddenly there was a terrible roar all around us and the sky was full of what looked like huge bats, all swooping and screeching and diving around the car, which was going about a hundred miles an hour with the top down to Las Vegas!' As knights of old buckled on armour of supernatural power, so Hunter S. Thompson enters Las Vegas armed with a veritable arsenal of 'heinous chemicals'. His perilous, drug-enhanced confrontations with casino operators, bartenders, police officers and assorted representatives of the Silent Majority have a hallucinatory humour and nightmare terror never before seen on the printed page.

    An indisputable American classic.

Possibly the most important American novel of the 20th Century. A dark and twisted exploration of the death of the American Dream, Thompson's gonzo-style of writing evokes the crazed drug-addled adventures if the author and his attorney, with both huge amounts of comedy and unpleasantly grim reality.

    dark, depraved and sordid...

A sordidly dark and depraved drug-fuelled adventure through the seedy underbelly of Nixon's America, this is a hilariously savage indictment of the "American Dream" gone wrong. A psychedelic 1970s countercultural classic from the pioneer of Gonzo journalism.

Buy the ticket, take the ride...

Practically vomiting onto the page, this seminal and some might argue vastly important work of journalistic hedonism, is ‘Doctor’ Hunter S. Thompson’s masterpiece, encapsulating an era, an attitude and above all a turning point in American culture.

This is the story, (or blow by blow account), or a debauched journalist and his equally unhinged attorney’s journey to a Las Vegas desert rally race while high on a cocktail of prescription, illegal and experimental drugs.

Given, not suited to everybody’s taste, it has moments or pure genius. From the comedic - relaying the details of a bewildering experience in a circus themed casino, to a tense, close to terrifying late night confrontation involving a waitress, a Dictaphone and a lemon pie.

Some can easily write off Thomspon’s work as sensationalist and meaningless, but in the word of the ‘Gonzo’ pioneer himself - “it never got too weird for me.”

    Brilliant!
