A deeply moving, haunting account of one man's journey into the wilderness

First published in 1999, Krakauer's remarkable book only became an international bestseller after the making of the so called movie. The beautifully written, true story of a young man breaking ties with his normal life to escape into the wild of Alaska is a touching book you will find hard to put aside.

Absolutely fantastic. The film was one of my faves of 2008 (it is vying for the magnificent Slumdog Millionaire for top-spot) and I went back to read the book. Jon Krakauer initially published this as a 9000 word article in the US magazine Outside but due to his own personal interest being ignited and the overwhelming response (both positive and negative) from magazine readers, he has extended the story and also included some really nice side stories about similar incredible undertakings to McCandless.
If you love the great outdoors, dream of exploring untamed wildernesses or just want to read about someone who does what any self-respecting traveller believes they 'could' do, then read Into the Wild. Oh yeah, and watch the film too.

If you've ever asked yourself 'who would I be without the things I own?', this book may inspire you to find out. It is the true story of Christopher McCandless, who, influenced by his reading of Tolstoy and Jack London, renounces his family and material wealth to head to Alaska, alone.
Fuelled by his belief that true happiness comes not from personal relationships but from man's experience of the physical and spiritual worlds, McCandless' epic and ultimately tragic journey is also one that inspires reconciliation, forgiveness, and love.
