My 14-year-old son wasn’t interested in books or reading until some school friends told him about Johnny Mackintosh. He made it through 300 pages unaided and from how he talked afterwards he seemed to have loved every one of them.
I read it to see what the fuss was about and it’s basically unputdownable – you’ve no idea what’s coming next, but Johnny’s such a great hero you live every twist and turn with him. It’s the sort of story that could happen to anyone. Just as Harry Potter waits until he’s 11 to discover he’s a wizard, Johnny Mackintosh becomes a teenager before unusual things happen to him. They take him backwards in time and across the galaxy, but it’s not some sort of space/sci-fi epic. At heart Johnny’s an ordinary boy who loves football, computers and space, with a sister and old english sheepdog who support him every step of the way. You will root for them to make it home and be reunited with their parents, but I challenge anyone not to shed a few tears along the way.
Sure to become a classic.
