Bookseller review
Slow, atmospheric, strange and sombre. You'll be haunted by Clarke's vision of a Victorian England withmagic as a thing of great possibility. Definitely one for a grown-up Harry Potter crowd

Bookseller review
An amazingly detailed novel about two rival magicians in 19th Century England. One is old, cautious & set in his ways, the other, young, brilliant & daring. Set in the historical context of the war with France & Napoleon, you will almost believe that this is fact not fiction! A brilliant debut novel.

My Aunty Linda has the best taste in books-as-gifts-to-me, so when I unwrapped this fine tome I was instantly pouring through its pages. Gilbert Norell attempts to concrete his fame and position amonst high society by convincing one and all that he is the indispensible and ONLY magician in 19th Century England. All is torn assunder by the arrival of Jonathan Strange who is less of a twisted fraudster and more the real thing in a charasmatic bundle. A vastly engrossing tale of tension between the dual natures of magic. I'm a massive fantasy fan, so whilst the premise alone was attractive, I found myself unable to put this book in any particular niche - so wide its reach. One of, if not the best book of this century so far.
