Judge Dredd. Born from the hysterical moral panic surrounding violence in comics in the late seventies, this fascist anti-hero has walked the walk through 31 years of armageddon, future crime, Mega-City banality and hopelessness, space travel and encroaching old age, appearing every week in 2000AD. The strip is currently being reprinted (only 21 years or so to go) and every edition is a goldmine of witty, gritty science fiction magic. Vol 5 is perhaps my favourite, as it includes the Apocalypse War, the story which turned half the Eastern seaboard of the US (as it was) into radioactive ash, featured the Sov judges of East Meg One (whose uniforms were so unspeakably cool that it was tempting to side with them) and Dredd's desperate guerilla fightback, which inevitably ended in the annihilation of his enemies. The pace and feel of the story mixes the grim heroic determination of war movies like the Dirty Dozen with the millenarian feel of imminent nuclear megadeath, which was rife in the early eighties when this was first published. The story was published over half a year and was a true epic in scale and vision, as brought to the paper by the hard-boiled genius of Carlos Ezquerra. if you have reservations about old-school inky comics, swallow your pride, and delve into this fantastic book.
