A fantastic book about being shipwrecked at sea with only some wild animals to keep him company.

Life of Pi continually pits one against another. Martel's Booker Prize winner is a story of battles throughout. Whether Science v Religion, Man v Nature, Instinct v Reason and The Collective v The Individual, Martel's fantastically fresh and original novel forces us to regognise and challeng the battles and personal struggles we fight everyday. Martel achieves this while challenging the very concept of storytelling itself.

This is the story of a boy on his way to Canada fleeing the troubles of India. The cargo ship he is sailing on sinks and poor Pi is left shipwrecked and orphaned with a Bengal tiger! Using his wit Pi must survive being shipwrecked, outlive the hungry tiger and deal with the loss of his family. An extraordinary story of hardship and the way the human mind prepares itself to survive or perish.

'Life of Pi' is the Robinson Crusoe of the 21st Century: a story of survival in the most improbable circumstances. When Pi Patel finds himself on a lifeboat with a zebra, a tiger, a hyena and an orang-utan for company he must have thought his days were numbered. However, his strange religious practices keep him safe, and human instinct ends up telling us one of the greatest stories ever told. Winner of the Booker prize, this is a tale to 'survive' the test of time.

A very unusual book. I really like Pi (the hero, named after a swimming pool). In fact, I think he would make a most interesting dinner guest. He has a very unique view on religion which I would love to discuss with him.
Pi has an extraordinary life, leading to being shipwrecked with several wild animals including a ravenous tiger. The story is funny, tragic and really surprising.
