For me, it surpasses Pride and Prejudice hands down. The main love story is perfectly intertwined with overtones the social issues of that time. Set in the midst of the industrial revolution, Margaret Hale, after being uprooted from her carefree life in the south is plunged right into the heart of the filthy, "godforsaken" industial town of Milton where she witnesses many social injustices to whom she blames the wealthy mill tycoon, John Thornton.
As she makes friends with the working class of Milton she finds herself more and more replusled with Thornton, who begins to fall for her willful and strong headed nature.
Unbeknownst to Margaret, Thornton has a deep awareness of the social issues underneath his logical, business like mind which has been bestowed upon him by his overprotective, stern mother. But they struggle to reach and understanding, despite an obvious attraction. The book has many twists and turns, tragedy and uplifting qualities which follows Margaret and her journey on understanding the world of the north.
