Fern loves a little pig named Wilbur and Wilbur's dear friend, Charlotte A Cavatica, a large grey spider who lived with Wilbur in the barn. With the help of Templeton the rat, who never did anything for anybody unless there was something in it for him, and a wonderfully clever plan of her own, Charlotte saved the life of Wilbur.

Unlike other cygnets, Louis, the trumpeter swan, cannot utter a sound. But with the encouragement of his father, Louis sets out to overcome his problem. Louis goes to school and learns to read and write, but when he returns to the lakes and falls in love with beautiful Serena, he is upset that Serena can't read his sign, which says 'I love you'.
