Penguins Stopped Play: Eleven Village Cricketers Take on the World

It seemed a simple enough idea at the outset: to assemble a team of eleven men to play cricket on each of the seven continents of the globe. Except -- hold on a minute -- that's not a simple idea at all. And when you throw in incompetent airline officials, amorous Argentine Colonels' wives, cunning Bajan drug dealers, gay Australian waiters, overzealous American anti-terrorist police, idiot Welshmen dressed as Santa Claus, Archbishop Desmond Tutu and whole armies of pitch-invading Antarctic penguins, you quickly arrive at a whole lot more than you bargained for. Harry Thompson's hilarious book tells the story of one of those great idiotic enterprises that only an Englishman could have dreamed up, and only a bunch of Englishmen could possibly have wished to carry out.

    Great Book

First of all "Penguins Stopped Play" is a book by Harry Thompson about the trials of an oxfordshire cricket team who decide to play cricket on the seven corners of the globe. Obviously this book being by the man behind the concept of "Have I Got News For You" the book is filled with the craziest anctics and misdemeanors possible. The way this book is written from the first-person makes it almost impossible to put down. No matter what happened in this book it made me laugh out loud. I won't matter if you are unfamilar or don't like cricket because even though there are the various descriptions of the games it is the off-field carrying on that will get you laughing like mad. Despite this being quite possibly the best book ever parents out there I would strongly recommend reading it over before handing it over to your child. The age cut off point be in my view a mature 14-15 but even at that. However! do not let this stop you buying this book. Compulsive purchasing recommended!!
