Bookseller review
This sounds like a tawdry novelisation of an 80's video nasty sequel but it is, in fact, a story that is based around the bombing of Dresden. Kurt Vonnegut was a prisoner of war and was in interred in the titular slaughterhouse while Dresden burned above his head. This makes it sound like a history book but it's not. It has elements of sci-fi, postmodernism, humour and factual detail. But above all, and shining through this, is Vonnegut's humanity and common sense approach to life even if it is nasty, brutish and short. Vonnegut died last year at a fine old age.

This book was a revelation to me. So much more than a WWII novel, Vonnegut's masterpiece takes in optometry, aliens, time travel and the worst sci-fi writer ever! A must read for all fans of the genre. Has made me a huge fan of this incomparable author..

Poignant, ironic and chock full of dry wit, Vonnegut’s Slaughterhouse Five is a must read for fans of all genres. Billy Pillgrim’s account of the inanities of war and the absurdities of the men who fight them has become renowned as one of, if not the best anti war novel ever written. Now a million seller even though the author considers it a failure.

I really miss Kurt Vonnegut. It’s a sad and sobering thought that I’ll never get to read a new book by this wonder author. If you’re one of the lucky few to whom his work is still unfamiliar then you should start with this. Forget that its set during WWII, this is as poignant and important a novel now as it ever was. It’s possibly my favourite book of all time. Sad, funny, imaginative and as original as can be. Vonnegut will be sadly missed – so it goes.
