After a terrible fire destroys the home of Violet, Klaus and Sunny Beaudelaire, the newly orphaned siblings are placed under the care of their eccentric and evil uncle, count Olaf. From there on, it is only tears, woe and misery for the Beaudelaires who are determined to find a way out of their misfortune.
Contrary to what the title suggests, A Series of Unfortunate Events is an extremely fun series of books to read. Lemony Snicket (a fictional character himself, used as a pseudonym by American author Daniel Handler) tells the story with a great love for language – a love shared by Handler in his book Adverbs. Beautifully illustrated by Brett Helquist, this series is equally delightful for children and adults. I particularly enjoyed Snicket's wordplay, use of obscure words and their explanations, while younger readers will definately enjoy the exciting adventures of the Beaudelaires.
