The Gargoyle

The nameless and beautiful narrator of The Gargoyle is driving along a dark road when he is distracted by what seems to be a flight of arrows. He crashes into a ravine and wakes up in a burns ward, undergoing the tortures of the damned. His life is over - he is now a monster. But in fact it is only just beginning. One day, Marianne Engel, a wild and compelling sculptress of gargoyles, enters his life and tells him that they were once lovers in medieval Germany. In her telling, he was a badly burned mercenary and she was a nun and a scribe who nursed him back to health in the famed monastery of Engelthal. As she spins her tale, Scheherazade fashion, and relates equally mesmerising stories of deathless love in Japan, Greenland, Italy and England, he finds himself drawn back to life - and, finally, to love.

    I can't believe I agree with Richard & Judy

Never would I have imagined a day I would read a R&J book, much less enjoy it. Turns out this is one of the best books I have ever come across, and this guy deserves every ounce of acclaim he has received. Incomparable, this book must be read.

    The Gargoyle

A young man lies horribly burned, the victim of a horrific car accident. He views his life as over, and vows to kill himself on his release from hospital. Then into his life walks Marianne Engel, and things will never be the same. This is an amazing story about the redemptive power of love, it's beautifully told and I couldn't put it down.

    The Gargoyle

After suffering terrible burns in a car accident the narrator of the story wakes to find a beautiful woman visiting him. She tells tales of medieval Europe and their love in previous lives. She is a sculptress of gargoyles, a skill she say he taught her. She says she gives a heart to each gargoyle, but her last heart is for him.

Told in short tales, the love story of the narrator and the visitor, and of other lovers around the world, shows the depth and intensity of the bond that she has with him, but which he remembers nothing of.

When treatment is over, he moves in with the sculptress and watches her create her final gargoyles.

As good a love story as I have read, crafted beautifully, passion and loyalty are explored very differently. A wonderful read.

    The Gargoyle

I ate this book up. A story about never-ending love through many lives, and how we are only small pieces in a much larger whole. Interesting. Takes you through the whole range of emotions.

A young, over-indulgent man suffers a terrible car accident and then finds out what are the really important things in life when he meets a strange woman whilst he's stuck in the hospital burns unit.

I too can't wait to see what he writes next - this is an excellent first novel, quite unlike anything I've read before.
