Bookseller review
Edward Gorey's rhyming alphabetical list of 26 children and how they met their various demises, drawn in his unique semi-Edwardian style, is macabre delight. This book highlights Gorey as the true godfather of alternative artists and blackly humouorous cartooning, Tim Burton wishes he was this good.

Should you be laughing at the sad endings of the lives of 26 children in this grim A B C? The answer would probably be yes, although it might be a guilty laugh. On the cover you meet the children, blissfully unaware of Death lurking behind them. Throughout the pages of this book you'll find out (in rhyme) how Amy, Basil and all the others came to their sad endings.
Gorey's Neo-Edwardian style of drawing and his witty writing make him unique in the world of the illustrated book. His dark stories have and undercurrent of humour which tickle your ribs and fill you with wonder and delight as you read them. His love for drawing is evident in every single line of his pen.
It is not surprising to see a film maker such as Tim Burton among Gorey's biggest fans. Gorey's influence is clearly noticeable in Burton's work. The Gashlycrumb Tinies is a wonderful introduction and an invitation to discover more of Gorey's works.
