7. So it started on Radio 4 then there was the book, then the TV show, then the book on tape, then the towel and then the film. What other format could it invade? And why was it adapted so much? The answer is that it's a great story about a man, Arthur Dent, out of his depth in space and constantly hoping for a nice cup of tea. Of course there is more to it than that - it eventually became five books (or a trilogy in five parts). Douglas Adam's writing is hilarious and his bizarre imaginings are superbly written so you can believe that a minor character has spent the year dead for tax reasons or that a robot can be morbidly depressed. Adams took sci-fi cliché and worked a number on it. It even tackles the big questions about Life, the Universe, and Everything.
