Mesmerising. I was completely submerged in the beauty of this book and it inspired me to try my hand at Chinese painting. Murasaki is a story teller, who becomes a favourite at the Japanese court. She has to endure many ordeals, and gradually becomes disenchanted with the pettiness of court life. The descriptive work and detail in this book are breathtaking, encapsulating Japanese art, culture and tradition.
