To Kill a Mockingbird

'Shoot all the Bluejays you want, if you can hit 'em, but remember it's a sin to kill a Mockingbird.' A lawyer's advice to his children as he defends the real mockingbird of Harper Lee's classic novel - a black man charged with the rape of a white girl. Through the young eyes of Scout and Jem Finch, Harper Lee explores with exuberant humour the irrationality of adult attitudes to race and class in the Deep South of the thirties. The conscience of a town steeped in prejudice, violence and hypocrisy is pricked by the stamina of one man's struggle for justice. But the weight of history will only tolerate so much...

    A Modern Classic

This Pulitzer prize winning story of bigotry and abuse is given a strange charm by its narrator, a young girl who's father, Atticus Finch defends a wrongly accused man against the wishes of man in his community. The book is littered with wonderful characters and is written in a way that gives a true insight into post war deep south U.S.A. A book for pleasure and thought.

    To Kill a Mockingbird

I first read this book at school, and it's one I've returned to frequently over the years. Atticus Finch is a character we all wish we could be, noble, courageous and willing to take a stand for what's right. Add to this, Lee's wonderfully warm and humourous depiction of Scout, Jem and Dill and you have a near perfect reading experience.

To kill a mockingbird (15 of 20 competition)

Set in the 1930s in the deep south, a story which everyone should read and from which everyone can learn. This is a tale of racism and injustice, told through the eyes of an innocent child, whose father who takes on the town over the trial of a black man accused of raping a white girl. Ultimately a story about basic human rights and family life, in fact everything we hold dear.
