Beginning with the murder of The Comedian, one of the now defunct team "The Watchmen", this intricate tale follows the old members of the team as they try to piece together just what is going on as Russia squares up with their nukes and the one true superhero, Dr Manhattan, leaves for Mars.

This seminal graphic novel takes place in an alternate 1980's where Nixon is still president and the superheroes are seriously screwed up.

Watchmen redefined superhero conventions and re-introduced comics to an adult audience with a gripping, labyrinthine piece of comic art.

Quite possibly. Out of stubborness I'd always refrained from reading this simply because of all the plaudits heaped on it, particularly all the back handed compliments that it is worthwhile simply because it isn't like other graphic novels, as though they are all so easily dismissed and miraculously this is somehow an exception. Except it is an exception, not just from other graphic novels but from 99% of all novels. This really is an astonishingly good book, the art, the characters and the plot all combine in a dazzling display of the power of fiction. This is thought provoking, relevant and thankfully bloomin' enjoyable. Read it now before the film arrives so you can smugly claim you were a fan before the movie. I promise you will not regret it.

The events, plots and characters of Watchmen are legion, and can not be easily described in a few words. Against the backdrop of threatening nuclear war, the remnants of the Watchmen struggle against their own pasts and a mysterious assassin determnined to prevent their future. Dark, gripping, definitely not a comic book. Read it, die happy.

I can understand that this is an aquired taste but I couldn't help myself but get immersed into Watchmen. It's absolutely compelling, the way it's written and the way it looks is mind blowing.

Graphic novels aren't for kids and the main reason that statement rings true is this story and its impact on the medium. Alan Moore's epic tale examines just what makes a group of well meaning members of society dress up in spandex and fight crime. What follows is a fascinating psychological study married perfectly with a fast paced conspiracy thriller. Comics really can be serious literature and Watchmen has found its way onto several set text lists in U.S. high schools. Anybody with the slightest interest in the genre, or even in crime and sci-fi books, ought to own this fantastic and iconic tome.
