Jolly is 17 years old and has two children from two absent fathers. She can't cope and so advertises for a babysitter. Verna LaVaughn replies to the advertisement and takes the first steps towards building her own future. Jolly, slowly, follows in her footsteps.
When LaVaughn was little, the obstacles in her life didn't seem so bad. School was simple, boys were friends. Everything made sense. Now she's 15 and the obstacles aren't going away anymore, and the boy who's a miracle in her life acts as if he's in love with her. Only he's not in love with her.
