New US singer Lady GaGa has said that it was always a dream of hers to achieve a number one single in the UK charts because she believes British music lovers are so discerning.
The 22-year-old peroxide blonde managed to knock X Factor winner Alexandra Burke's Hallelujah off the top spot on Sunday with her catchy single Just Dance.
She admits that she became emotional when she heard the news because it was such a long-standing ambition.
"It's been a long running dream to have a big hit in the UK - my fans there are so sexy and the people are so innovative and free in how they think about pop culture and music," Lady GaGa explained.
"I was in my apartment in Los Angeles getting ready to go to dance rehearsal when they called and told me, and I just cried."
Lady GaGa has already achieved international success having spent the last eight weeks at number one in Australia and recently topping the charts in her native USA.
She is also in the running for a dance music prize at next month's Grammy Awards.
