I'm looking forward to the South East Asian countries in the blog, that particular area of the world has been my favourite so far. But alas, there is still plenty that I haven't seen...

In 1998, on the lookout for adventure and willing to take a risk, John Burnett left the comforts of the mainstream and became a UN relief worker in Somalia, a place where the only authority comes from a loaded gun. Held at gunpoint by a child soldier, watching a baby die in his arms, the experience profoundly changed the way he saw the world.

Where Soldiers Fear to Tread: At Work in the Fields of Anarchy
John Burnett

3 out of 5 (0 agreements, disagreements)

I loved this book - it's not too 'worthy' and you really empathise with the author as he struggles with the chaos around him. He explores why people choose to do relief work, and what drives people to train and facilitate child soldiers. There are some excellent personal tales and truly shocking tales of the floods in Somalia.
