Im a student midwife and reading is my vice. I read on the way to uni, placement or anytime I should be studying or working on exam work. Whilst I'm not the biggest sci fi fan, Terry Pratchett is my favourite author and let me tell you; the man is an absolute genius! You may have been put off his work if you saw the tv adaptations of some of his books, or if like me you think you dont like sci fi. But please, give the books a chance they are amazing.
Some of my other favourite books at the moment are the Luxe series by Anna Godbersen. These are deffinately girly books but not in the least soppy. They are glamourous and scandalous, do read!

It's the night before hogswatch. And its too quiet . Where is the big jolly fat man? Why is Death creeping down chimneys and trying to say Ho Ho Ho? The darkest night of the year is getting a lot darker... Susan the gothic governess has got to sort it out by morning, otherwise there won't be a morning.

I love all of the discworld series and cant wait till the next instalment due out later this year. However the book that I chose above is not neccessarily the best, (it is impossible to choose a favourite)and instead is the one which i would reccomend to a first time reader as it grasps you within the first few pages, the one and only fault in the rest of the books.
Whilst these books are indeed sci fi, you almost forget whilst reading it. For example, the priniciple city in the books 'Ankh-Morpork', is like many cities in the real world, very diverse and full of different cultures. The difference being that instead of different races of human beings living not quite in harmony, in Ankh-Morpork we have humans, trolls, dwarves, werewolves, Death etc. all living together. The trolls are hired as splatters (bouncers that throw harder), the dwarves open up specialist fast-food shops and Death likes a good curry. In other words, although some of the characters are indeed of a fantasy nature; they are treated like any other characters in books set in the real world, allowing for cultural differences that is.
Discworld books are also massively funny. And thats coming from a Scot!(were hard to please, just ask the english.) I cant describe how he does it but to use the cliche, u will be rolling around laughing.
Terry Pratchett is also very clever. The thinking that goes on behind the plot is phenomanal, showing just how brilliant this man is.
