Golding's best-known novel is the story of a group of boys who, after a plane crash, set up a fragile community on a previously uninhabited island. As memories of home recede and the blood from frenzied pig-hunts arouses them, the boys' childish fear turns into something deeper and more primitive.

Lord of the Flies
William Golding

4 out of 5 (0 agreements, disagreements)

Not nearly enough people read this for pleasure anymore. Most of us were force fed it during senior school, and the mere idea of the book conjures up images of phlegmatic English teachers rambling about bruise coloured seas and the like. Put aside traumatic childhood memories, and take the time to enjoy this classic your way.

Dark Lord: (Falconfar Saga)
Ed Greenwood

4 out of 5 (0 agreements, disagreements)

Ed Greenwood is the man who crafted the Forgotten Realms, the most popular and enduring Dungeons & Dragons world of all time, spanning countless novels, roleplay tomes, videogames and even (probably) t-shirts. When he starts off something new, it would be wise to sit up and notice.

Falconfar is a new fantasy world of his, and this first book is up to his usual high standard. Different, funny, ...

Dhampir

I hate quotes on covers trying to sell a book when it is complete fabrication. On Dhampir it says it is like Buffy meets LOTR. Hmm yes there are vampires and it is a fantasy novel, and um... yep, that is it.

Dhampir is the first novel of the Noble Dead sequence. It is a gripping dark fantasy, which is very much character driven. The "good guys" and "bad guys" are not always clear cut, but all ...

Carrie
Stephen King

3 out of 5 (0 agreements, disagreements)

Well have you? Most people know him as the legendary horror writer, but I have found surprisingly few people have read anything of his, passing it off as a genre irrelavant to them. They are missing out in a big way.

Carrie is one of his earliest works, and tells the tale of a troubled pubescent teen, brought up to fear the wrath of God by a tyrant of a mother, and bullied endlessly by her cruel ...
