The son of Sicilian immigrants, Capra worked his way through college with a view toward becoming a chemical engineer. Instead, he found himself employed as a gag writer by Mack Sennett. In the ensuing years, he directed and made a silent star of Harry Langdon, and eventually built up Columbia Pictures into the major Hollywood studio--becoming in the process one of the most successful directors of the 1930's.
