Thomas hardy is one of the sacred figures in english writing, a novelist with a world reputation, but above all a great poet. this work is a selection of hardy's love poems. (Paperback)
P/B. 368 pages, condition is very good, slight fading to the spine. For this revised edition, the text of the poems-based on Collected Poems in the first edition-has been corrected and made consonant with that of The Complete Poems of Thomas Hardy, edited by James Gibson (1976). The Introduction and the Notes have been revised and, where appropriate, amplified. By nature and choice Hardy was a poet. He wrote poetry long before he turned to novels to make a living, but his first volume of verse was published only in 1898 when he was a famous novelist of 58. Before his death in 1928 he produced a very long dramatic poem, The Dynasts (finished 1908), and seven more volumes of shorter pieces. All were representative exhibitions of his work from the 1860s onwards. The system behind their sequence is hard to discern in the Complete Poems, which observes the order established by Hardy in the earlier Collected Poems. The total ceuvre therein printed makes an impression (albeit a misleading one) of enormous bulk arranged at random, and this has deterred readers and obscured some of the unity and greatness of Hardy's art. Mr Creighton's selection of 282 poems provides a critical introduction and companion to the Complete Poems. It offers, not 'the best of Hardy', but a cross-section of all his work in reduced compass and systematic arrangement, and seeks to allow his art to reveal itself by defining its main kinds and preoccupations. The editor has been guided by Hardy's tentative classifications in several volumes or by the nature of his work to group its contents into general categories-'Nature and Man', 'Love', The Past and the Present', 'Poems Dramatic and Personative', 'Ballads and Narrative Poems'. Mr Creighton's Introduction describes the principles of selection and arrangement, and discusses some leading qualities of Hardy's poetry and personality. The Notes give extended commentary on aspects of the poetry and explain problems that arise in the text. All Hardy's Prefaces are printed in full, together with a collection of his views about poetry and the arts.
