Part of the Official "History of the Second World War". The book was attacked in some quarters on publication on the ground of undue restriction of the author's access to sources, although Foot was generally regarded as having produced an excellent work within the constraints imposed on him. Subsequently threats of legal action required the book to be reissued with changes: this is the first edition as originally issued. "This book presents for the first time, from a blend of official and less official sources, an account and analysis of SOE's work in France. It begins by explaining what SOE was, where it fitted into the allied war machine, and how it. worked into France; points indispensable for understanding what it did. Next, the narrative recounts the adventures, far stranger than fiction, of its agents who worked on French soil. This intricate tale concentrates on the work of the four hundred picked men and women of the' independent French' section; though it covers also SOE's five other sections operating mainly in France. All told, the six sections despatched over eighteen hundred clandestine agents, who between them changed the course of the war. Mr Foot has used a mass of official material, never hitherto available, ranging from formal official documents to pilots' reports of parachute drops and agents' messages scribbled under the shadow of the Gestapo. But he writes as an historian, not as an official; preaching no doctrine, he tries simply to explain what happened. In chapters on strategy and politics he discusses the comparative value of SOE's effort and of more normal methods of war. He inclines to think that, had it not been for the leadership, the arms, and the communications provided by the best of SOE's agents, the national uprising that liberated so much of France in August 1944 would have been far less effective; might indeed have been delayed until too late. "-from the blurb.
