This collection of Carr's essays on historiography and the philosophy of history, remains a seminal introduction to this contentious area of debate. Carr argues that there are many definitions of what History is, and what it means for different sections of society at different times. Carr's primary argument is that the interpretation of history from certain historians is dependent upon their position in society, and indeed are formulated by society's view of the period. One historian writing in the 1950's may have a totally different interpretation of events than say, a present day historical writer. The book itself is in a acceptable overall condition. Spine very good indeed. Front cover acceptable. It has a small crease to the bottom right-hand corner. Also a faint crease near the spine. Back cover good. Faint crease to the bottom left-hand bottom edge. Pages tight, slightly tanned, but unmarked. We offer a no questions asked returns policy on book value. ( D: w: )

( Penguin 1987, Paperback. ) Carr's legacy in terms of being a historian who seriously thought about what it is that historians do, can be judged from what he said in WHAT IS HISTORY about the standards deployed by the historian to do history. In seeking objective knowing Carr argued the historian must have an end in view and be willing to use theory. The historian must also recognise there are no absolutes in doing history apart from the certainty that all is relative. This is not to suggest every interpretation is as good as any other, but that each can only be judged by the 'sense of direction' of the historian producing it. This sense of direction can be seen not just in getting the 'facts' right, but in each historian having a judgement as to the ultimate nature of their 'long-term vision over the past. Ultimately, all historical facts come to us as a result of interpretative choices made by historians influenced by the standards and preoccupations of their own time. The book itself is in a very good overall condition. Spine excellent. Front cover also very good. It has a very small faint crease at the bottom right-hand corner edge. Back cover very also very good. Slightly bummped at the top left-hand corner edge. Pages remain tight, somewhat tanned, but unmarked.
