8vo-over 7¾"-9¾" tall 0582233801 Paperback Richard Wright was born on a plantation near Natchez, in the state of Mississipi in 1908, just over forty years after the end of the American Civil War. He published twelve books; achieved an international reputation as a writer; exiled himself from America after the Second World War; was married to a white woman; and died in Paris in 1960. In his life and work he can be seen to stand for the difficulties, the dilemmas, the possibilities, and the tragedies of the life of the American Negro as he emerges from slavery and struggles toward freedom and equality. Black Boy is not a pretty book; nor is it sensational in any vulgar money-catching way. In some ways it is difficult to understand, because his attitudes are sometimes quite unpredictable and even surprising. One last word: Black Boy can be read in two ways: as the tragic and harrowing story of a young Negro growing up in a difficult and treacherous world; or, more generally, it can be read simply as a story about growing up. Illustrated with a sequence of photographs Images of the Lost by Charles John Laughlin. Slight foxing to edges.
