In winter 1953-54 the French army in Vietnam challenged its elusive enemy, General Giap's Viet Minh, to pitched battle. Ten thousand French paras and legionnaires, with artillery and tanks, were flown to the remote valley of Dien Bien Phu to build a fortress upon which Giap could smash his inexperienced regiments. The siege which followed became a Stalingrad in the jungle, and its outcome shocked the world. 'Enthralling...Windrow gives a clear and cogent analysis of the general politico-military position...Anyone who found Stalingrad absorbing will find this book equally so. Like Beevor, Windrow gives one the very essence of battle...His character sketches of individuals, from commanding officers down, are deft and acute...This book is a wonderful account of a terrible battle' Allan Massie, Literary Review
In December 1953 French paratroopers, who had been searching for the elusiv e Vietnamese army, were quickly isolated by them and forced to retreat into their out-gunned and desolate jungle base-a small place called Dien Bien P hu. The Vietnamese besieged the French base for five long and desperate mon ths. Eventually, the demoralized and weakened French were utterly depleted and withdrew in defeat. The siege at Dien Bien Phu was a landmark battle of the last century-the first defeat of modern western forces by an Asian gue rilla army. The Last Valley is the first new account of the battle since th e 1970s. The author has incorporated much new material from French and Viet namese sources, including veteran interviews, making this the most complete account to-date. And Martin Windrow has received widespread praise from to p historians such as John Keegan and Max Hastings (below), as well as revie wers on both sides of the Atlantic.
In this fascinating work, Windrow examines the last major action by the French imperialist forces in Dien Bien Phu, in their attempt to maintain their Indo-China empire by holding onto Vietnam. The siege which followed became a Stalingrad in the jungle, its outcome shocked the world; its consequences forced the French to leave Vietnam, while it increasingly confirmed the USA in its decision to intervene itself in Vietnam. In order, in its view to 'stop communism'. The book itself is in near pristine condition. Spine very good, one or two very faint lines. Covers excellent. Pages tight, clean and unmarked. A remarkabe book about a now almost forgotten conflict. I offer a no questions asked returns and refunds policy on book value if returned within seven days of delivery.
