Sarah Lucas is one of the leading contemporary artists at work in Britain today. Born in London in 1962 and first coming to prominence in the early 1990s as part of the Frieze generation, she has gone on to forge an international reputation with her challenging and often darkly humorous works that in many cases re-deploy found objects to stunning effect. This extensive, large format catalogue raisonne, which includes over 270 colour illustrations and accompanies a major international touring exhibition, will be the most exhaustive publication on Lucas in print. Reproducing every existing work made by Lucas to date, it will allow examination of the themes that have dominated the sculptures, photographs and installations she has produced over the last fifteen years. Lucas transforms ordinary materials in a way that makes us question our perception of the world around us. Her own self-image recurs, often in forms that challenge traditional representations of the feminine. Cigarettes, with their phallic and oral overtones and association with death are both represented and eventually become a medium in themselves. Her fascination with slang and the pun combines a very English humour with a Duchampian love of word-play. Lucas explores issues of class and nationality through her deployment of the St George Cross, tabloid newspapers and the male environments of the pub. Complete with overviews of Lucas' career by British and European critics, this is an essential purchase on one of Europe's most intriguing artists.

That was the title of Sarah Lucas' last show, in which the pun-prone artist assembled an array of sculptures constructed from cast concrete forms, tacky beige nylon stockings, and random metal objects. These typically abject art pieces fit right into the body of work Lucas has been building since the early 1990's from apparently banal, everyday materials. Old, worn furniture, clothing, food, newspapers, cigarettes, cars, resin, plaster, neon lamps, and light fixtures combine to form grungy assemblages whose appearance belies the serious and complex subject matter they address. Through the slyly anthropomorphic character of her sculptures, Lucas makes constant reference to the human body, questioning gender definitions and challenging male-dominated culture, especially that espoused by the sensationalist British press. She subverts sexual stereotypes in her appropriations of the tabloid vernacular by making unexpected juxtapositions of objects, often employing visual wit, and a defiant, bawdy humor.
