So, 'Super Thursday' is here. The first week of October sees the launch of many of 2008's biggest releases including Nigella, Gok, Parky, Jeremy Clarkson, Alan Carr, David Walliams, Dawn French, Frank Skinner and many more. But, are they the best books of 2008?
We want to know what you think is the best book of 2008 and why. The best comment wins a £10 voucher. Easy.
A detective novel set in Palin's Alaska where Yiddish-speaking Jews have taken refuge and now are about to be kicked out. Down-on-his-luck policeman tries to solve mysterious murder before time runs out (for the "Yids", for himself, for hope itself). Brilliant language, intricate plot, unfailing humor. Also profound. Chabon is a genius. Yes, he already has a Pulizter, but this book is even better than the one that won.
...what a great read if you don't believe me I challenge you to read them you WILL NOT be disappointed. What literary genius that is Stephenie Meyer
It's always nice to read a book by a new author - as there is a lot of dross out there - which ticks all the boxes, and Cycling Back to Happiness - Adventure on the North Sea Cycle Route, was a winning gamble.
I don't cycle (and you really don't have to to enjoy this story) but was tempted in by a back cover blurb, promising laughs, pirates, witches, arm wrestling competitions with Danish trawlermen, Viking super markets and backward Shakin' Stevens discos.
Just for once the publisher's promises paid off!
Bernie Friend certainly knows how to tell a good story.
The first part of the book deals with some rough topics, a disabling travelling anxiety and the sudden, shock death of his much loved mother at a young age.
But the journey up northern Europe is far from depressing, a laugh out loud tale on two wheels which will keep you steering towards the next page and finding it hard to turn the bedside lamp off and get some shut-eye.
There are so many interesting characters and funny stories, stitched together with interesting historical facts about some very obscure places right on our very own door step.
From island shagging tips in a remote German bar to a retired, and always drunk, Shaggy of Scooby Doo fame running a Danish campsite, your face will hurt through the smiling.
I hope we hear more from this new author!

I might be a little late to post my comment for the best book for 2008, but I still want to share what I think is the best book of '08.
I chose this book for several reasons, mainly because it's an entertaining read, with moments which are well described with a handful of laughs... But a few laughs won't do it... would it? No.
This fantastic book has a really in-depth story line, with well-thought-out characters and moments which are creative and new.
